Once you’ve made the decision to study law, the next question you need to ask yourself is which degree should you take. Is it a Bachelor of Laws, a Bachelor of Arts in Law or a Bachelor of Science in Law degree?
At Varsity College, we offer tuition support for a Bachelor of Laws, known as an LLB. If you’re wanting to become an attorney or an advocate, an LLB is an internationally recognised law degree that’s geared toward students who want to pursue a career in law.
Studying to become a lawyer can be quite challenging. We’ve put together a list of five helpful tips for every student wanting to study law:
- Referencing and sourcing
Make your essays stand out by doing extra reading and research. A great essay doesn’t rely solely on referencing lecture notes. It needs to be well crafted and thoroughly researched. - Take Notes
Take notes while you’re reading through case studies. Make summaries. This is known as briefing cases, it’ll help you memorise the rationale behind the court's ultimate decision. It’ll also help with legally significant facts. - Use feedback to thrive
In South Africa there is a perpetual need for qualified accountants and bookkeepers. Both degrees are beneficial in the long run as they are essential in business. - Reviews really do help
You should make attending reviews part of your preparation for exams. Review sessions will help to clarify issues you may be confused about and it’ll refresh your memory right before you take your exams. Depending on your lecturer you may also receive tips on how to answer and approach specific questions. - Focus on your own goals
Studying law can seem to be highly competitive, don’t get caught in that trap. Spend your time and energy setting and reaching your own goals. Focusing on your own work, and on your own progression, will stop the anxiety that can arise from an overly competitive atmosphere.
