Golfers and corporates who participated in the recent annual Varsity College Durban North helped raise R77 000 which will go towards purchasing a mobile library for the Marianhill Junior Primary School as part of the Masixhasane Literacy Project. The Golf Day was hosted in association with title sponsor McCarthy Toyota Durban North at the Beachwood Country Club.
The Better Ball challenge had a full field of golfers tee off for charity, with perfect weather, three fun holes arranged by Varsity College Durban North students plus a range of lucky draws and raffles. Miss South Africa 2015, Liesl Laurie, gave an inspiring speech on literacy during the prize giving, before a wide range of prizes was presented.
Fathima Naidu Student Relations Manager at Varsity College Durban North says, “On behalf of Varsity College Durban North I would like to thank the players and the sponsors, your support will open many opportunities for the children at Marianhill Junior Primary School and will help develop their literacy skills.” The school currently has 1 215 learners and 30 staff members, with classes ranging from grade R to grade 5.
The Masixhasane Literacy Project distributes mobile library units to underprivileged areas. Varsity College has chosen the AV800 Mobile Library Unit, which features a library frame manufactured from steel and is powder coated, 800 books covered with plastic with library cards fitted, a 40 Inch LED Smart TV fitted, DVD Player with 30 DVD'S, 6 Heavy Duty Padlocks, 8 Heavy Duty Castors, as well as Varsity College branding.
Varsity College Durban North and Westville are currently planning the handover, which will take place in November 2015 at the Marianhill Junior Primary School.
