Myths that Communication students are tired of

If you’re one of the ambitious individuals that chose to study Communications, we salute you. We also understand the kinds of questions you get asked on a regular basis about your chosen programme, and where you hope it’s going to take you. In fact, you might be tired of having to field strange enquiries about your BA Degree in Media or Corporate Communications. It’s okay. We’ve got you covered.

Here’s the truth about those Communication Degree myths.

MYTH: It’s a single, one-dimensional discipline of study

Most of the time, people falsely believe that this degree only touches on communications alone. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It covers a host of skills, fields and even areas of expertise. From advertising to digital, corporate and even public relations, communications is anything but one-dimensional. It’s something that takes on many forms across a variety of career paths. It also encompasses research techniques as well as the analysis of communication methods and messages. A BA Degree in Communication will also blend elements of Psychology, English and Sociology.

MYTH: You’re less employable than others with a different degree

The truth is, your choice to study a BA Degree in Media or Corporate Communication could actually open more doors of opportunity. Because it isn’t a single discipline of study (see above) you won’t be limited to just journalism or media alone. When you consider how many people change professions after being in their field of study for a few years, it’s comforting to know that the broadness of your BA will help you get into several fields. Based on the skills you gain, you can change your mind about which industry you want to be in and make the change without having to study a whole new degree. Now that’s what we call flexibility! In addition, communication will never become outdated, no matter how technology evolves. This means that those who study a Bachelor of Arts will always remain relevant and sought-after.

MYTH: Communications students took the easy way out

This is possibly the most frustrating myth that BA students have to put up with, and a very uninformed one. Just because this degree doesn’t entail learning complex formulas doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have its own level of difficulty. Those who are great at numbers would probably struggle with the English and writing concepts associated with a BA. Logical, number-driven minds might also find the abstract concepts associated with Psychology and the human mind more challenging to navigate. It all depends on each individual person’s strengths and interests and it’s important that we are all respectful and tolerant of these.
