Student Profile – Abigail McPherson

“Be open minded to different job opportunities even if a particular job does not relate to the degree that you have studied. You could learn valuable skills that will aid you in attaining your career goals”, says IIE Varsity College graduate Abigail McPherson.

Abigail recently graduated with an IIE Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce with a stream in Financial Management and now works at BSi Steel in Pietermaritzburg as a finance intern.

“I’m part of the various financial departments including debtors and creditors. At the moment I’m focusing on learning more about the debtors department. I’ve been dealing with opening customer accounts, updating systems, general customer relations as well as sending statements and invoices to customers. The next will step will be to join the creditors department and to be given more responsibilities,” adds Abigail.

BSi Steel is a South African JSE Alternative Exchange listed group of companies with strong ties to the greater Southern African market. The company’s primary product range consists of mild (carbon) steel in all its different forms.

“I’m looking forward growing in my career and one day becoming an accounts analyst,” concludes Abigail.
