Varsity College recently hosted the first annual Women With A Bang event where more than 120 young women attended. The event was aimed at uplifting and empowering young women through speaker engagement, mentorship and networking opportunities.
The same event was used to handover six bursaries valued at up to R30 000 each to deserving young women. The bursary campaign was a collaborative effort between Miss South Africa 2015, Liesl Laurie, The Business School at Varsity College and Gagasi FM.
Says Sané Ndlovu, National PR and Events Manager at Varsity College: “We received many bursary applications and motivation letters via Gagasi FM and it was a positively challenging task to select the recipients because all the letters were so touching and sent with the best intentions.”
The six ladies chosen are: Wanda Nsele, Fezile Ndlovu, Melissa Dias, Zinhle Ngidi, Sinenhlanhla Khathi and Pamela Mkhize.
“They were chosen because, in their letters it was apparent that they were hungry for the opportunity to empower themselves through education so that they could make a difference in their communities and their families. Some of the young women come from challenging financial and family situations. We do hope that the opportunity to study will be the first step in bettering their lives,” adds Sané.
The event attendees enjoyed themselves and were quite intrigued and captivated by the speakers and the topics that they covered.
Editor of Urban Life ‘n Style Magazine, Aaliyah Mia and her daughter Iman spoke about the importance of mother and daughter relationships.
Chairperson of Businesswomen’s Association KZN and Head of ABSA Private Bank KZN, Mpume Langa spoke about the importance of entrepreneurship amongst the youth as well as consumption versus creation in relation to the South African economy.
Miss South Africa 2015, Liesl Laurie spoke about the importance of education and how young girls should take pride and what they have earned through hard work and dedication instead of what is handed to them.
Dr Nomfundo Dzingwa spoke about health issues that affect females.
Among the guests were Varsity College’s Managing Director , Odette Francesconi; Varsity College Durban North Campus principal, Margie Boosey and the Head of The Business School at Varsity College, Simon Nicolson.
