What is the difference between an LLB degree and a BCom Law degree?

Are you researching a career in law? If so,  you’ve probably come across the terms “LLB” and “BCom  Law.” It’s common for people to misunderstand these two degrees and get them mixed up, but they’re actually very different.

The misconception comes from the fact that  both qualifications are degrees in law. But here’s how they differ:

A BCom Law is an undergraduate degree that  requires three years of studying. It’s designed to give students a broad background  in law and focuses specifically on economics and management sciences.

Students studying a BCom Law learn about the  South African legal system, private law, business enterprises laws, labour laws  and customary laws. It is a perfect degree if you’re looking at becoming a  legal advisor

Having a degree in BCom Law complements an LLB degree, because it creates a broader perspective  on topics such as taxation and commercial law. The goal of completing a BCom  Law degree is usually to study an LLB degree  afterwards, in order to become a lawyer or advocate. However, if you’ve decided  you want to become a lawyer and you’re interested in studying an LLB degree,  then you should definitely consider studying with us, at Varsity College.

An LLB (Bachelor  of Laws) degree is an undergraduate degree that requires you to study for four  years. LLBs are more in depth and focus specifically on developing theoretical  knowledge and practical skills needed to start your formal law career.

An LLB degree  gives you the opportunity to become an attorney, advocate, prosecutor, a corporate  legal advisor, or a public defender, to name a few.

At Varsity College, our interactive learning  environments encourage you to formulate arguments and express your opinions. Our  collaborative approach to education welcomes you to actively participate in  your studies, engage with subject material, build understanding and develop  your ability to think critically.

There are other reasons why you should  study at Varsity College. It’s an internationally recognised degree and it’s highly  sought after in the legal profession.

We’re also part of The Independent  Institute of Education (IIE), which is the largest, most accredited private  provider of higher education in the country. Meaning you’ll be receiving an education  of the highest quality.
